Elegant, structured and instantly recognisable, the Hermès Kelly is far more than a handbag, it is one of fashion’s most enduring status symbols. From royal connections to meticulous craftsmanship, the Kelly has become a true investment piece admired by collectors and luxury lovers worldwide.
The Origins Of The Kelly Bag
The story of the Kelly begins long before it carried it's famous name. In the 1930s, Robert Dumas, son in law of Émile Hermès,  designed a structured handbag for women inspired by the brand’s equestrian heritage. Originally called the “Sac à dépêches”, the design featured a trapezoid shape, a single top handle and the now iconic clasp fastening.
It's clean lines and refined silhouette immediately reflected the sophisticated craftsmanship Hermès became known for.
Grace Kelly And  The Birth Of An Icon
The bag’s legendary status arrived in 1956 thanks to Hollywood actress and Princess of Monaco, Grace Kelly.
Whilst pregnant with Princess Caroline, Grace Kelly was photographed shielding her baby bump from paparazzi using her beloved Hermès bag. The image appeared in magazines around the world and sparked enormous demand for the elegant handbag.
Women began requesting “the Kelly bag” in Hermès boutiques, and by 1977, Hermès officially renamed the Sac à dépêches as the Kelly.
Today, the Kelly remains one of the most coveted luxury handbags ever created.
Why The Kelly Remains So Desirable
Every Hermès Kelly is handcrafted by a single artisan in France, with each bag taking many hours to complete. The attention to detail, premium leathers and limited availability contribute to the Kelly’s exclusivity and exceptional resale value.
Collectors particularly love the Kelly for its:
  • Structured silhouette
  • Elegant top handle design
  • Timeless appeal
  • Investment potential
  • Exceptional craftsmanship
Unlike trend led handbags, the Kelly transcends seasons and generations.
Retourne Or Sellier Understanding The Difference
One of the most important details collectors look for is whether a Kelly is a Retourne or Sellier style.
Kelly Retourne
The Retourne is softer and more relaxed, with stitching hidden inside the bag. It has a slightly casual elegance and slouchier silhouette.
Kelly Sellier
The Sellier is sharper and more structured, with visible exterior stitching and crisp edges. It offers a more formal, polished aesthetic.
Both styles are highly desired, with preference often depending on personal taste and lifestyle.
